ARTIST STATEMENT

Generally speaking, my works use the form of traditional Chinese painting to express the face of China. China is developing dramatically today and many things in China are under constant construction. Meanwhile many things have disappeared and continue to disappear. The dumps and rubbish covered with the 'shield', the green netting, are a ubiquitous phenomenon in China.

I want the world to be able to make a benign transformation. People must protect the environment. This work implies that the world should become more and more harmonious.

Photography can be understood in traditional ways : It can 'record' many histories long before our own time, and it can take people back to times and situations many years ago. But photography also is very contemporary. It can re-assemble and re-edit the things that we actually see in order to produce illusions that people see when they are in front of such photographic works. In these works, you see images that are true and fictional.

Concerning the style of my works, I believe in maintaining a beautiful feeling in the framing of the image, including composition, line, density and its framing, all the elements regularly contained in painting. I think a good art work is composed of many elements, and it should reflect the knowledge and the skill of the artist. A good art work has intelligence.

The flexibility of photography provides a big expressive space for me, I can work with it in many ways in making my creations.

ARTIST Bio

Chinese artist and photographer Yao Lu (born in 1967, China) studied Fine Arts at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (Beijing, China) and Photography at the Queensland College of Arts, Griffith University (Brisbane, Australia). Based in Beijing, China, he is a professor at the Photography Department of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts alongside his artistic practice.

Yao Lu’s approach of photography is very contemporary, as he re-assembles and re-edits true images in a fictional way. With his photomontages, he wishes to express contemporary issues: the dramatic development and urbanisation of China, the environmental crisis. Yao Lu’s works are inspired by traditional Chinese painting in their aesthetic, composition and framing, creating the illusion of classical Chinese landscapes.

For more than 15 years, Yao Lu’s work has been exhibited in China and abroad, in major museums and photography events such as the AIPAD (New York City, USA), the CAFA Museum (Beijing, China), the Busan Photo Festival (Busan, South Korea), Paris Photo (Paris, France) and the Shanghai Center of Photography (Shanghai, China). In 2008, he won the BMW-Paris Photo Prize for Contemporary Photography.

ARTIST STATEMENT

« De manière générale, mes oeuvres prennent la forme de la peinture traditionnelle chinoise pour exprimer une facette de la Chine. La Chine se développe considérablement aujourd'hui et le pays est en constante construction. Pendant ce temps, beaucoup de choses ont disparu et continuent de disparaître. Les décharges et détritus recouverts du « bouclier », le filet vert, sont un phénomène omniprésent en Chine.

Je veux que le monde puisse effectuer une transformation bénigne. Les individus doivent protéger l'environnement. Mon travail implique l’idée que le monde devienne de plus en plus harmonieux.

La photographie peut être comprise de manière traditionnelle : elle peut « enregistrer » de nombreuses histoires qui se sont déroulées bien avant notre époque, et elle peut nous ramener à des époques et à des situations qui datent de nombreuses années. Mais la photographie est aussi très contemporaine. Elle peut réassembler et rééditer les choses que nous voyons réellement afin de produire des illusions, telles que mes oeuvres photographiques. Ainsi, en regardant mes oeuvres, le spectateur observe des images à la fois vraies et fictives.

Concernant le style de mon travail, je crois en l’importance du cadrage de l'image, ainsi que la composition, le trait, la densité et son cadre, tous les éléments que l’on retrouve dans la peinture. Je pense qu'une bonne oeuvre d'art est composée de nombreux éléments et qu'elle doit refléter les connaissances et les compétences de l'artiste. Une bonne oeuvre d'art a de l'intelligence.

La flexibilité de la photographie m'offre un grand espace d'expression, je peux travailler avec ce médium de plusieurs manières dans la réalisation de mes créations. »

ARTIST Bio

L'artiste et photographe chinois Yao Lu (né en 1967, Chine) a étudié les beaux-arts à la Central Academy of Fine Arts (Pékin, Chine) et la photographie au Queensland College of Arts, Griffith University (Brisbane, Australie). Basé à Pékin, en Chine, il est professeur au département de photographie de la Central Academy of Fine Arts de Chine parallèlement à son activité d’artiste professionnel.

Yao Lu possède une approche très contemporaine de la photographie. Il réassemble et réédite de vraies images pour créer un visuel final fictif. Avec ses photomontages, il souhaite évoquer des enjeux contemporains, comme le développement et l’urbanisation dramatiques de la Chine et la crise environnementale. Les oeuvres de Yao Lu s'inspirent de la peinture traditionnelle chinoise dans leur esthétique, leur composition et leur cadrage, créant l'illusion des paysages chinois classiques.

Depuis plus de 15 ans, le travail de Yao Lu est exposé en Chine et à l'étranger, dans de grands musées et événements photographiques tels que l'AIPAD (New York City, USA), le CAFA Museum (Pékin, Chine), le Busan Photo Festival (Busan, Corée du Sud), Paris Photo (Paris, France) et le Shanghai Center of Photography (Shanghai, Chine). En 2008, il remporte le Prix BMW-Paris Photo de la photographie contemporaine.
