Lee Jin Woo, born in 1959, Seoul, South Korea, received a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Sejong, Korea, in 1983 as well as at the University of Paris VIII in 1986. He currently has his studio in Paris where he now lives and works. In mid 70s Korea, a generation of artists broke with their artistic heritage, calling themselves the Dansaekhwa group, a Korean term for monochrome painting, initiating an exploration into the physical limitations of art’s materiality, connecting the viewer to the spiritual principles of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. Lee Jin Woo is part of the next generation of artists. His work shares formal parallels with the movement, however, looking at matter by employing Hanji paper fixed on linen mixed with volcanic ash, resulting in objects at the border between painting and sculpture. His work can be found in important collections around the world such as the Musée Cernuschi - Museum of Asian Arts in Paris, and with exhibitions in France, United Kingdom, South Korea, China and Japan.

Lee Jin Woo, né en 1959 à Séoul en Corée du Sud, est diplômé des Beaux-Arts de l'Université de Sejong, Corée du Sud, en 1983 ainsi que de l'Université Paris VIII en 1986. Il a actuellement son studio à Paris où il vit et travaille. Au milieu des années 1970 en Corée du Sud, une génération d'artistes rompt avec son héritage artistique, se faisant appeler le Groupe Dansaekhwa d’après un terme coréen désignant la peinture monochrome, l’exploration de la matérialité de l'art, et le lien aux principes spirituels du taoïsme, confucianisme et bouddhisme. Lee Jin Woo fait partie de la génération d’artistes suivante. Son oeuvre partage cependant des parallèles formels avec le mouvement Dansaekhwa, explorant la matière avec l’emploi du papier Hanji fixé sur toile de lin et couvert de cendres volcaniques. Il en résulte des objets à la frontière entre la peinture et la sculpture. Le travail de Lee JinWoo fait partie d'importantes collections à travers le monde telles que le Musée Cernuschi - Musée des Arts Asiatiques à Paris, et est exposé en France, au Royaume-Uni, en Corée du Sud, en Chine et au Japon.
